Veteran singer Teresa Cheung celebrated six decades in show business with a sold-out performance at The Londoner Arena in Macau, featuring surprise appearances by some of Hong Kong entertainment’s biggest names.
HONG KONG – Teresa Cheung’s “Qing Ruo Zhen” tour stopped in Macau last weekend, bringing together generations of Cantopop royalty for an evening that honored both the singer’s remarkable career and the golden era of Hong Kong music. The concert, held Saturday at the Cotai venue, drew celebrities including Liza Wang, Candice Yu, and TV King Wayne Lai as special guests, while audience members Law Kar-ying, Lily Wong, Vivian Chow, and Faye Tong were spotted in attendance.
Cheung opened the show with “Ban Wo Gao Sheng Chang” before addressing the crowd directly. “Many friends couldn’t buy tickets to my Hong Kong concert, so I promised I’d find another stage to perform for you,” she told the audience. “I’ve kept that promise. How many of you came all the way to Macau because you missed out on Hong Kong tickets?” The question drew thunderous applause.
The singer then delivered two Mandarin classics, “Gao Shan Qing” and “Jiao Dao,” which she noted were part of her very first performance at Lai Yuen Amusement Park decades ago.
Honoring an Era of Musical Greats
Reflecting on Hong Kong’s vibrant 1980s music scene, Cheung described it as a time when “almost every singer had their own classic work.” She performed a medley of iconic songs including “Wo Zhi Zai Hu Ni,” “Qian Cheng Jin Xiu,” “Jin Xiao Duo Zhen Zhong,” “Wei Ni Zhong Qing,” and “Stand by Me.”
“I’m very honored to have shared the stage with so many of them,” she said. Cheung paid tribute to her mentors, composer Joseph Koo and lyricist Jimmy Lo, before performing “Mang Mang Lu,” the theme song from a 1979 RTHK radio drama.
A Night of Surprise Duets
Wayne Lai joined Cheung for “Mo Mo Wu Yan,” expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn from the veteran performer. He later delivered a solo rendition of “Yi Hai Hao Qing.”
Candice Yu, despite nursing a foot injury, performed “Wu Xia Di Nu Hua” as a duet with Cheung. “I’m so grateful she came to support me even while injured,” Cheung told the audience.
The emotional highlight arrived when Liza Wang appeared onstage for a reunion performance of “Si Duo Jin Hua,” the signature song from their girl group days. Cheung asked the crowd to applaud in memory of late group members Lydia Shum and Maria Chung.
Wang praised Cheung’s resilience, noting: “She started singing at a very young age, even before I did. In our group, she always handled the most difficult parts. Later she got married, studied traditional Chinese medicine, and became a doctor. Now she’s returned to music – we call it a second spring.”
Looking Ahead
The concert concluded with a surprise birthday celebration for Wang, whose birthday falls this month, as the audience sang “Happy Birthday” around a cake that rose from the stage floor.
Cheung closed the evening with “Qing Yi Liang Jian Xin,” wrapping up a show that spanned her entire career from child performer to seasoned artist. The singer is expected to take her anniversary tour to additional cities, continuing a remarkable journey that has seen her evolve from teen idol to respected industry elder and licensed Chinese medicine practitioner.
