SHANGHAI — Hong Kong singers James Wu and Hubert Wu delivered a night of nostalgia and humor on Saturday at the Shanghai Grand Stage, where their “1/2 James Wu × Hubert Wu Concert” drew fans from across China with a setlist of classic TV theme songs—and an unexpected crowd chant for a shirtless encore.
The pair, both alumni of the long-running Hong Kong singing competition The Voice (超级巨声), have known each other for over a decade. Onstage, their easy rapport was on full display. When Hubert noticed James sweating through a ballad, he reached over to wipe his brow, then turned to the audience and led a chant demanding James take off his shirt. James shot back, “I still want to come back here to perform. I don’t want to scare people away!” The retort drew roaring laughter.
‘1+1 Greater Than 2’
In a post-show interview, Hubert Wu reflected on why the two decided to join forces. “An individual might not get very far alone,” he said. “But with two people and a team, you can achieve an effect where one plus one equals more than two, and you can reach unexpected places.”
The concert’s playlist was curated after polling fans on social media, focusing on beloved Hong Kong TV series theme songs and interludes—a move that sparked sing-alongs across the venue. Yet the duo admitted that communicating with a Mandarin-speaking audience posed a challenge. “About 90 percent of our banter in Shanghai had to be in Mandarin,” Hubert said. “It’s a huge challenge to make sure every word lands clearly.” He praised James for his dedicated efforts to improve his Mandarin pronunciation.
Mutual Respect and Life Milestones
Both singers rose to fame through The Voice and have since carved distinct paths. Hubert singled out James’s decision to marry and start a family last year as a mark of courage. “I really admire his bravery in embracing marriage and family responsibilities,” Hubert said. James, in turn, joked that he hopes Hubert will soon join the married club, adding: “Hubert has always been goal-oriented and decisive—you feel very secure working with him.”
During the whirlwind Shanghai schedule, which included live-stream sessions and rehearsals, Hubert managed to visit a silver jewelry store he has invested in locally. He thanked fans who stopped by to take photos and show support.
Future Tour Plans: Beyond Guangdong
Looking ahead, the duo aims to expand beyond their traditional fan base in Guangdong province. They specifically named Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Xi’an as desired stops—with Chongqing’s spicy hotpot at the top of their must-eat list. “We hope to unlock more cities on the map, and while we’re at it, sample the local cuisine,” James said.
The Shanghai concert marks the latest chapter in a growing trend of Cantopop stars reaching northward into mainland China’s interior markets. For Wu and Wu, their 1/2 tour concept—signaling that each brings half the energy—seems to be resonating beyond expectations. Whether the pair can sustain that momentum through a full-scale national tour remains to be seen, but for now, their chemistry is proving that two halves can indeed make a whole.
