Louis Koo Announces ‘A Step Into The Past’ Extended Cut on Valentine’s Day

Hong Kong cinema icon Louis Koo hosted a lavish celebratory banquet in Tsim Sha Tsui last night, marking the remarkable box office success of his latest film, A Step Into The Past. The cinematic adaptation of the popular time-travel television series has garnered over HKD $88.88 million (approximately $11.37 million USD) in cumulative sales across Hong Kong and Macau since its release, prompting the star to announce major new editions for fans.

The celebratory gathering, held on Monday, May 10th, reunited many of the film’s original cast members, including Jessica Hsuan, Raymond Lam, Joyce Tang, Sonija Kwok, and a rare public appearance by Michelle Saram. During the event, Koo officially unveiled the upcoming release of an enhanced version of the movie, titled A Step Into The Past Plus+ Multiverse Edition. This extended cut is slated to premiere on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, an unusual but deliberate timing, according to the actor.

Extended Film and Soundtrack Launch Scheduled

Koo, who is currently nominated for two Best Actor awards at the upcoming Hong Kong Film Awards for A Step Into The Past and Sleuth: Under The Moonlight, explained the decision to launch the extended cut on a romantic holiday. He noted that the film, while centered on historical adventure, profoundly explores various forms of affection—familial bonds, deep friendships, and mentoring relationships—making it suitable for couples or families celebrating the occasion.

Adding to the excitement, Koo announced the simultaneous launch of a new collection album, titled “Heaven’s Mandate: Back to the Past Greatest Hits.” The collection, which includes a highly collectible vinyl edition, marks his return to releasing music after many years.

“It’s truly a happy moment to launch this album, and the vinyl format holds significant collection value,” Koo stated, crediting the film’s success for inspiring the musical revival.

He also confirmed plans for an autograph session limited to 200 participants on February 14th. When pressed by media and cast for a full signing and singing showcase, Koo demurred, suggesting that while a dual event is complex to manage, a separate mini-concert after the signing is a possibility.

Cast Gives High Praise and Support

The celebratory atmosphere was infectious among the cast. Jessica Hsuan eagerly shouted out her desire to hear one of Koo’s iconic hits, “The Current Trend,” perhaps even with the accompanying dance routine, while Michelle Saram encouraged him to perform a rap segment. Koo simply chuckled at the suggestions, saying, “Wishes and actions are two different things!”

Saram, whose return to the screen was a pleasant surprise for many fans, expressed her joy at reuniting with her co-stars. When asked why she had not been involved in the pre-release promotional campaign, she explained her schedule commitments and added that maintaining a level of secrecy made her reappearance a bigger surprise for the audience, enhancing the film’s appeal.

On his dual Best Actor nominations, Koo acknowledged the career validation, calling it “double the happiness,” but reserved his highest praise for co-star Joyce Tang. Tang received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in A Step Into The Past. “Joyce is an integral part of this story, and I am genuinely thrilled for her nomination,” Koo affirmed, throwing his full support behind her bid for the award.

The newly announced extended edition and musical release promise to give fans fresh content and demonstrate the enduring legacy of the A Step Into The Past franchise, cementing its place as an intergenerational cultural touchstone in Asian cinema.
