Hong Kong Star BA Launches in Macau, Aims to Boost Cross-Border Cultural Exchange

MACAU, June 7, 2024 – Actor Ko Chun-yin led the official launch of Hong Kong’s inaugural celebrity basketball team, Hong Kong Star BA (Star BA), in Macau yesterday on June 6, signaling a new venture that blends entertainment, sport, and music. The initiative, spearheaded by Ko and supported by regional sports officials, aims to leverage basketball exhibition matches to foster cultural and goodwill exchanges across mainland Chinese cities, beginning its tour in Xi’an.

The official unveiling was held with notable presence from sporting dignitaries, including Ho Siu-kwan, Head of the Special Plan Division of the Sports Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, and Wu Song-fai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Basketball Association of China Macau. The team, which draws talent from Hong Kong’s entertainment sector and professional sports, is positioned not just as a performing troupe but as a platform for meaningful interaction.

Blending Professionalism and Star Power

Ko Chun-yin was formally recognized as the team’s captain during the launch ceremony, where he was presented with the number 15 jersey—a symbol of his leadership and responsibility. The roster includes talents such as actors Lui Hei and Chan Wai-hung, Mr. band members Ronny Lai Chak-yan and MJ Tam Kit-ming, alongside current players from the Macau Black Bears professional basketball team. This cross-disciplinary approach is intended to provide a foundation for both quality performance and long-term viability.

Captain Ko emphasized that the team’s mission extends beyond mere competition. Following the official announcements, the Star BA members took to the court for a spirited demonstration and practice session, showcasing their skills to an enthusiastic audience, which included Ko’s wife and daughter.

Captain Ko’s Vision: Romance, Resilience, and Revival

For Ko Chun-yin, the launch represents the culmination of a lifelong passion. He described basketball, which captivated him since his early teens, as “a man’s romance.” The actor cited the competitive drive of NBA legend Kobe Bryant as a profound influence, particularly during challenging periods in his own career.

Ko candidly reflected on a severe career slump, during which he dedicated significant time to intense basketball training. This commitment, however, led to ruptured Achilles tendons in both legs, requiring extensive surgery. Yet, even this major setback did not diminish his dedication to either basketball or his acting ambitions.

“Star BA is more than just a celebrity team,” Ko stated. “It is a cross-platform endeavor integrating entertainment, sports, and music. We hope to travel to different cities with like-minded friends and use sports to advance cultural exchange.”

While acknowledging the inherent pressure that comes with leadership, Ko expressed a determination to attract more genuine basketball enthusiasts from the creative industries. He envisions the team having a powerful, positive influence by combining dynamic entertainment with impactful content.

Following their launch in the Greater Bay Area, the team’s initial tour itinerary includes an opening match in Xi’an, followed by cultural exchanges in Hainan Island, before continuing their goodwill journey across various mainland provinces. This blend of sportsmanship and high-profile entertainment is set to provide a fresh avenue for cultural connectivity and regional engagement.
