TV Travel Hit Duo Reveals Secrets to On-Screen Chemistry

The remarkable success of the HOY TV travelogue, “Undercover Tourist Group” (臥底旅行團), which recently clinched a prestigious LINE TODAY Golden BROWN Award, is largely attributed to the vibrant and unpredictable partnership between hosts Sammy Leung and Ashley Lo. Following the recent recognition, Ms. Lo, affectionately known as ‘Mui Tao’ (妹頭), stepped into the solo spotlight to discuss the dynamic of the show and her strategies for managing her often-unconventional co-host.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with HOY TV, Lo admitted that appearing without her long-time collaborator, Sammy Leung (often referred to as ‘Ah Cheng’ or 阿正), felt surprisingly unfamiliar. However, she quickly pivoted to revealing the secret to their effortless on-screen synergy: treating Leung as an endearing, albeit unpredictable, challenge.

Lo described Leung’s on-air persona, which has become increasingly freewheeling and spontaneous, stating that despite their years of collaboration, his actions are becoming harder to anticipate.

“It’s actually quite good without him,” Lo joked, before clarifying her perspective. “He is essentially a big kid. Because we have worked together for so long, I know his temperament, and I try to appeal to what he likes. He is a truly erratic person, and now he is increasingly unpredictable, allowing himself more and more freedom.”

Despite the challenges of hosting alongside such volatility, Lo embraced the chaos, explaining that their interactions are genuinely relaxed and heartfelt. “The tension is gone. If he wants to run wild, I’ll run wild too,” she said, suggesting a playful competition for the audience’s attention.

The television partnership has been highly productive, propelling the show into the must-watch category and securing an industry accolade that underscores its broad appeal across digital platforms.

From Dancer to Beloved Host: A Full-Circle Journey

Lo also reflected on her enduring career in broadcasting, which began during a radio talent search. She recently reunited with fellow contestant and friend, Bobo Lam, on the set of the HOY TV drama “My Family Has Happy Events” (我家有囍事).

“It was quite a magical feeling,” Lo shared about working with Lam again. “We knew each other when we were just starting out. It felt like a reunion after more than a decade, and she looks even younger now, maintaining herself so well. It makes you wonder why you haven’t done the same! But the fact that we are both still working in this industry gives me a huge sense of security.”

Lo also clarified the origin of her numerous nicknames, including the widely used ‘Mui Tao’ and a more unusual moniker: ‘Kame Sen’ or ‘Turtle Immortal,’ referencing a character from popular Japanese media. She explained that the nickname originated with veteran radio host Sammy, who suggested it during her early days on air as an easily memorable name derived from her English name, Grace. The nickname ‘Mui Tao’ was later coined by radio colleague Fanchey Fan.

While Lo once pursued a dream of dance, culminating in an appearance as a dancer for the “Hacken and Alan” live concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum, she expressed deep satisfaction with her current career path.

“When I was young, I went to dance school, and eventually had the chance to perform at the Coliseum. But looking at where I am now, being able to do the work and the programs I love, I feel so fortunate and fulfilled,” she stated. “Success is not about defining a specific outcome. The most important things are enjoyment, dedication, and genuine passion.” Lo’s continued enthusiasm and adaptable hosting style promise enduring success for future seasons of Undercover Tourist Group.
