Global music phenomenon the Black Eyed Peas (BEP) returned to Hong Kong after 20 years, delivering an electrifying performance at the West Kowloon Cultural District’s Art Park on November 19, 2024. The highly anticipated “BLACK EYED PEAS HONG KONG 2025” concert drew a star-studded audience and featured a powerhouse opening act by local singer Gin Lee, setting the stage for a night of nostalgic hits, powerful messaging, and deep connections with the vibrant metropolis.
The show, held at the outdoor venue, underscored the enduring appeal of the American hip-hop group, known for blending pop, dance, and rap influences. Members performed timeless anthems like Let’s Get It Started, Boom Boom Pow, and Rock That Body, sending waves of energy through the crowd. Notable attendees included prominent figures such as Martin Lee Ka-shing and his wife Cathy Chui Chi-kei, along with singers Janice Yan, Terrance Ng, Mike Tsang, and Jennifer Yu.
Deepening Ties with the City
During the performance, BEP members expressed sincere affection for Hong Kong, noting how the city remains a dynamic, creative, and fashionable hub. Member apl.de.ap revealed a poignant, personal tie to the region, stating, “My sister, Jennifer lives here now and is a resident. So in a sense, I am also one of your neighbours.” He emphasized that every visit to the city provides him with warmth, inspiration, and love, which he carries back home, crediting Hong Kong for its enduring influence.
Fellow member will.i.am reflected on his journey, recalling discovering his passion for music at age 16 and expressing gratitude to the crowd for allowing him to live his dream on stage. He offered a message of hope, encouraging fans to solve life’s challenges through love. In a powerful moment, he requested the audience to illuminate the venue with their phone flashlights for a massive singalong of the seminal track, Where Is the Love? The concert concluded with the infectious energy of I Gotta Feeling, during which the group repeatedly shouted out their appreciation for opening act Gin Lee.
Gin Lee Prepares for Home Arena Show
Warming up the stage was Cantopop star Gin Lee, who delivered a vibrant set of fast-paced songs that heightened the audience’s anticipation. Later, speaking to reporters backstage, Lee shared her excitement about meeting the iconic group, whose music had accompanied her formative years.
“Black Eyed Peas’ songs really soundtracked my college days,” Lee stated, recalling how she revisited their catalogue and realized she knew every track. Although they didn’t share a stage performance, she took the opportunity to chat and take photos with the veterans backstage.
Lee leveraged the high-profile opportunity to announce her own upcoming solo concert series at the prestigious Hong Kong Coliseum in February 2025. She tentatively scheduled two shows but expressed hopes for adding more dates if initial demand is strong. She confirmed the shows would feature a highly anticipated four-sided stage design.
Beyond her concert preparations, Lee addressed her burgeoning success, including securing a top-eight spot in the latest voting for the “My Favourite Female Singer” category at the esteemed Commercial Radio Music Awards. She confirmed plans to coordinate with her team to campaign vigorously for a spot in the final five nominations. Following her demanding Coliseum performances, Lee intends to take a well-deserved extended holiday, aiming to travel and chase the Aurora Borealis as a celebratory reward.
The Black Eyed Peas’ return not only thrilled long-time fans but also reinforced Hong Kong’s status as a major cultural gateway in Asia, attracting top international talent and providing a creative platform for local stars like Gin Lee.
