A devastating five-alarm fire in the Tai Po district of Hong Kong, which resulted in multiple casualties and individuals still unaccounted for, has spurred significant community efforts, including direct outreach from local celebrities. On October 30, a fan of Cantopop star Keung To publicly shared her disbelief and gratitude after allegedly receiving a personal message from the singer checking on her welfare following the blaze at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex.
The fan, known by the nickname “Keung Candy” used by Keung To’s followers, detailed the surreal interaction on the social media platform Threads. Dealing with the emotional fallout of the disaster and residing in the affected complex, the woman recounts receiving an unexpected WhatsApp message. According to her post, the sender, claiming to be Keung To, informed her that he was aware she lived in Wang Fuk Court after cross-referencing her address through the membership system of his personal clothing brand, To Zero.
The fan expressed profound emotional distress over the incident, stating she was standing on a nearby platform looking at the seven damaged towers, overwhelmed with concern for missing neighbors, when the message arrived. Her husband opened the unfamiliar number and identified the singer.
“He asked me how he should address me, saying he wanted to record a message to encourage me and tell me to hold on,” the fan wrote. She subsequently received an audio recording from the singer late that night. In the recording, Keung To allegedly promised to arrange for colleagues to send clothing and asked what further assistance she required. “It was Keung’s voice, I recognized Keung’s voice,” she emphasized, astonished that the star was aware of her situation. “He will pray and cheer for me.”
Keung To later confirmed his actions on Threads, responding directly to the fan’s post. “I learned about your situation through my colleagues. I hope everything is well with you. Please tell us if you need any help,” he wrote.
While the generous gesture has been widely praised by fans across social platforms, the unusual method of communication prompted a necessary warning from the star. Keung To took the opportunity to caution fans about potential scams.
In a follow-up post, the singer advised his fan base on immediate steps to verify future communications from him or his team. “To prevent concerns about fraudulent messages, when you receive a message from us, we will ask you to verify previous purchase details to confirm identity,” he explained. “If the opposite party cannot clearly verify the information, please do not disclose any personal information and immediately block the person.”
The incident highlights the immediate and personal role celebrities are playing in providing aid and support after the destructive Tai Po fire, while also underscoring the ongoing concerns about online security and identity theft during times of crisis. Celebrities and community leaders continue to urge supporters to contribute financially or through volunteer work to aid those impacted by the tragedy.
